Read before buying an exotic pet!The vast majority of problems people encounter with their exotic pets is that they didn't get enough information about the pet they have before they obtained it. Exotic pets almost always have specific diets, and specific housing requirements. Some of these requirments (especially with reptiles) mandate expensive and elaborate enclosures to get the conditions right. Many people are shocked to find how involved reptile enclosures need to be, how much time is required to own a bird, or how hard it can be to find the proper hay for the herbivore pets.Think before you buy: How much do I know about this animal, do I have the money to care for it properly, will I still want this pet in 5,10, or 75 years if it lives this long? Listen to the experts: Most of the time that is your exotic trained veterinarian. Before assuming that the pet store clerk is giving you good information, ask them what kind of training they've had... most of the time (but not all) it is no training. Read about the pet and the requirements: For many of there more common extoic pets there is good literature out there describing what needs to be done. Most books/articles are written on opinion so read many different sources. By being prepared before purchasing you can save your pet suffering, and your self a lot of time and money!
