Our Veterinarians
Dr. Mackenzie Hellert
Dr. Hellert grew up on her family’s farm right here in Dubuque, Iowa, where her love for animals began long before veterinary school. She graduated from the Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011 and has since gained extensive experience in soft-tissue surgery, internal medicine, emergency care, and general practice.
In 2021, Dr. Hellert and her husband, Brett, purchased PetMed Animal Health Center, and in 2024 they proudly expanded their vision by acquiring Key West Animal Clinic and merging the two practices to create PetMed of Key West Veterinary Clinic—a truly local, family-owned clinic. Together with their incredible team, they’ve built a practice where everyone is treated like family—both two-legged and four-legged alike.
At home on the family farm, Dr. Hellert and Brett share life with two spoiled dogs, Martin and Thaddeus, and a few equally pampered horses. In her free time, she helps care for her family’s flock of Jacob sheep, llamas, and chickens, along with a Giant Flemish rabbit named Adeli. She also enjoys gardening, riding and driving her horses, and traveling—having worked and explored from Alaska to Arizona to Florida and plenty of places in between.
Dr. Naomi Tigges
Dr. Tigges was born and raised in the Dubuque area and has always had a passion for caring for animals. She graduated from the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009 and joined our veterinary team in 2022.
At home, Dr. Tigges is a proud mom to two wonderful children, Ella and Clark, along with two cats and a guinea pig.
Dr. Tigges is a compassionate veterinarian that believes the heart of veterinary medicine lies in the powerful bond between people and their pets. She is dedicated to strengthening that special bond with a focus on client education, preventive medicine, and empathetic care. She strives to enhance both animal health and the quality of life for pet owners.
Her professional interests include preventive medicine, internal medicine, and end of life issues with a focus on dogs, cats, and small mammals. She is committed to fostering lifelong relationships built on compassion, understanding, and respect.
When she’s not in the clinic, Dr. Tigges enjoys cross-stitching and listening to music as ways to relax and unwind.
Dr. Kim Bergfeld

Dr. Kim and her husband, Bernie, live on a beautiful farm in Bernard, IA, where they enjoy the peace and rhythm of country life. They have 2 children, Ryan and Kelly.
